Portuguese as Second Language
In the mid 60s the Portuguese elementary school opened its doors to the community. At that time the President of the Vasco da Gama Portuguese Club highlighted the importance of learning of the Portuguese Language for the Portuguese Community: “Awareness of our heritage, the experiences and developments that our community has been through give the younger generation direction, power and inspiration for the importance of the learning of our language and culture “.
On March 30, 1981 the school achieved a great milestone by officially being recognized and accredited by the Ministry of Education in Portugal. All of our experienced teachers are highly qualified in the teaching of foreign languages and ensure lessons are lively and that all the participants are involved.
Today the education program still specializes in providing Portuguese as a Second Language. The Portuguese Language Courses are designated to develop the students’ ability to understand and use both spoken and written Portuguese for students to be fluent in Portuguese.
Part of the education curriculum includes trips and activities to enable children the opportunity to experience Portuguese culture and language. Throughout the year children will participate in singing traditional songs and plays that are open to our community. This provides an opportunity for students, parents and friends to gather to gather and demonstrate their educational progress through fun activities. Through these activities children will learn the Portuguese language, culture and literature.
Courses are open to the public, including different nationalities who are interested in learning Portuguese.
